Actually, when I built my own desktop computer, I noticed that (when on a budget) some of the most expensive stuff you'll get are the monitor and Windows OS, though that is on my rig, which has the following specs:

CPU - AMD Athlon II x3 3.4GHz
GPU - NVidia GeForce GT 630
RAM - Kingston 4Gb DDR3 (don't remember the speed, and am not on my desktop right now)
MoBo - ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3
Monitor - Samsung 22'' or 23'' 1920x1080px.
Keyboard & mouse - some random one for now. I've ordered a new one from amazon though. that would be a AULA keyboard/mouse combo.

I'm thinking of building another computer, but that will have to wait another year or so, depending on whether I can make some money over the winter or not.

How much did this cost you?

I don't quite remember, it was something and £80, either £280 or £380, what I do remember for sure though is when I configured the same parts on pcpartpicker, it came to around £70 more so it was worth what I paid at the time.
