It should be left alone honestly. With there being so many programs out there that you can use for this anyways. For example a favorite one "TrueCrypt" is a very good encrypting program. There is a guide for it for people who are new to computing so it really helps. And yeah NTML hashes are weak maybe they should simply update that feature to a stronger encryption such as AES-256.
