When AI was rolling out, the first thing I was shocked by was how it actually understood mathematics, science, etc.

The challenge really is the comprehension of the AI model to provide an output that is meaningful.
I'd imagine the model was nerfed a bit since it came out (societal pressures always lead to that - e.g., driverless cars), but the potential is most definitely harnessed by the military industrial complex.
...wouldn't be surprised if AI is logic forming and self-executing in that context - imagine drone Airforce squadrons that pre-determine threats by mere movements (algorithms) in the battlefield.

In terms of medicine, I could see no reason why AI would solve some of our biggest challenges when it comes to cancer, HIV, etc. But as it stands today, it is a validation tool for analytics required for meta-analysis, mathematic formulas and scientific reactions of compounds/chemicals/etc.
