If you're interested in something really different, might be worth trying Aku no Hana. If the plot and animation style aren't off-putting, I'd recommend it.

Anime takes place in a decaying town and was the first one to extensively use rotoscoping. By no means a stereotypically good anime, but I was glad I watched it.

Oh this looks like a great suggestion. Id like to try this one out too. It comes up a lot on recommendation lists.
