It's not regulated and legalized like most of Europe or Latin and South America yet is more common by the sheer numbers of people involved. It's not "normal" common, but statistically so.

I'm honestly surprised you're both a Sinister.ly member and this repressive. There's hookers in every Middle Eastern country as well. Just check any escort site. They buy porn, too.

Repressive? I think you may have misread Dismas's posts from what I've read. To me, it seemed like he was talking about balance.

I believe it's perfectly normal for people to watch porn or engage in stuff like that, but it's not particularly healthy for self-esteem/mental expectations to spend ten years of your life with a sex robot. It's going to be harder to find a life companion, should that be something you want. If you're not interested in that, then it doesn't matter.

It's the same with anything, "too much" of something can have negative consequences. Sex robots will be no different. Sex robots can and will, have negative implications on people's ability to socialise and manage relationships with real humans. You could name 5 other things that have similar impact.

Oddly, out of everyone I've ever met, I could count how many I know who have sold themselves or purchased sex with someone on one hand. I don't think it's as common as being implied, but it's obviously common enough or prostitution wouldn't still be a thing.

Consider how many people have lousy sex lives and are in relationships, though. Just about everyone masturbates, or has over a large period of their life. I have been around a lot of women who strip. They just don't admit to it later because they don't want to be seen in that light. Go to any club and you'll see very very attractive women doing it. Escorts and the like are often very attractive, but there is a spectrum all the way down to the backalley crackhead sucking dick for quarters. It is much more common in metro areas.

Besides that, you don't have to spend a decade with a sex robot. You could just have it as a side thing. It'll probably break by then, anyway. Have you stayed with a woman for 10 years?

You've missed my point if that's your conclusion. I'm not seeking to regulate anything and I'm not telling anyone what they should/shouldn't do. I'm only stating the potential outcomes for people that overindulge. Just like not everyone that drinks alcohol becomes an alcoholic, not everyone that relies on robots/prostitutes is going to be a sex fiend. Realistically, robots are stuck in "uncanny valley", where they're a mess of animatronics/silicone. However, that might not always be the case. With the advancement of technology, people should be worried about the potential implications for relationships.

When they surpass the uncanny valley stage, or get closer to being comfortable, I bet they'll end up being a household thing. People will become so accustomed to robots being around that it won't even matter. I've found several non-sexual robots people have developed on sites like Hackaday. There's complete instructions to 3D print several robots out already, and most are human-sized.

It's going to end up being like every other vice in that sense, though. Prostitution is illegal. Sex is all but frowned upon by today's liberal-yet-conservative when the law is applied-society. Look how many stripclubs there are. Better yet, how many bars there are. Alcoholism is heavily frowned upon, yet every single day there's thousands of drunk people driving around all around you and you don't even notice. Marijuana legalization has millions of people getting stoned every single day and you don't even notice. Try sites like Fetlife, skipthegames, Escort Society, Chaturbate, the list goes on and on, and you'll see what kind of freaky stuff people do every single day, even right this second, all around you.

I'm sure you have your own vices. Maybe you eat a little too much, spend a little too much time online, don't shower enough, whatever, but so does everyone. I can understand it's because people find these things pleasureable and continue to seek it out like a drug addict would, but they're often not addicts and choose to continue because it feels good, but stop when it affects their life in a negative way. Work could be considered the same thing since you gotsta have that money to get by. I'm not promoting hedonism but really anything enjoyable could be considered just that, not just sex or drugs or rock and roll. It's easy to preach about everyone else's faults, though.

Then there's the almost-paranoid, possibly conspiratorial angle to it all. Why are people so conservative yet allow so much vice to happen? Police conveniently leave all of the businesses and many people alone, just arresting the low hanging fruit so it looks like they're solving the problem. The dealers stay around, though, and always have. The same will probably happen with sex robots. Hell, weird alt-right radical groups and even extra-liberal leftists will probably try to force people into doing it at some point. Maybe there's another pandemic, or there's some medical reason people should all have test tube babies, but the issue will eventually arise. It happens all the time. There's still countries without equal rights and with extreme class segregation who don't have the same rights and are subservient to their ruler's whims. Even in "democratic" countries we don't all live how we want, and there are elite groups who run the shitshow from behind the scenes.

I can't say that I have stayed with a women for 10 years, then again, I am a straight woman myself...

There isn't as many women who do that sort of thing among the general population, but that's not to say there aren't plenty of women who do. It's more of a 1/10 thing than the 6/10 that your posts make it sound like haha.

I think you're right in the sense that it's very human to seek stuff out like this. But it will have some kind of impact, the same as any vice we may have has some kind of impact.

I am slightly amused at the idea of teachers having to educate young people about "safe sex" then going onto the topic of sex robots. Can you imagine!
