I'm assuming it's his religious beliefs that are making him believe like this.
I remember when I was religious before I turned atheist...

But you can't blame his beliefs solely on religion as well. I am a Christian and I have no problem with gay marriage. This is because if they wan't to get married they should. Who are we to tell someone else what they can and can't do. Religious beliefs could be the basis of his beliefs but it may not be the only thing.
