I read an interesting article about the prospect of moving our planet into a wider orbit prior to the Sun becoming a red giant. Not that any of us will be around billions of years from now when it happens.
It's more they think that will happen as a result of the sun's expansion. However, the current predictions suggest that it would still be fatal as the sun will continue to heat up between now and when it becomes a red giant. It will evaporate our oceans before that point.
