Riseup is a group of services hosted by some very smart people in activists networks, compsci, cyber/tech circles etc., that have been in the scene for a while now. I have had an account for about a decade. They don't keep logs, except for the IP you connect to for the signup/filling out the questionnaire to join. Idk if that's the MO now but I'd be glad to give you a invite code. It is probably lesser known of the free VPNs out there. I donate each year to support their server upkeep at least. You don't have to donate but their desktop app reminds you every few days and you can block the notification for that if you're so inclined. NABD. The VPN is just PPTP so it's not some elite VPN service, but it is becoming more private as it is brought to light, like a private tracker. The users are mostly journalists and activists, as well as developers but it's not limited to just VPN. It comes with access to alias-able e-mails & encrypted storage, Tor access, webmail, chat, crypt pads, lists and a ticket system for support.

Used to be lesser known and higher bandwidth. That was a decade ago when I got mine and they've evolved to the use of multiple aliases for emails, now the VPN Red (which was confusing to setup) is now VPN Black. It comes with a sweet desktop app/provider, android app (this doesn't require an account or login). VPN is now separate to the other things like chat and pads. The MX servers are fast and encrypted (TLS) by default (read: required) but offer low quotas. I recommend using a client app like Thunderbird or Bluemail for keeping e-mails on your own devices and freeing up space. Also an invite code is not required for the vast majority of services provided by riseup. This includes mailing lists (https://lists.riseup.net), VPN (https://riseup.net/vpn) and crabgrass (https://we.riseup.net/). The only affected services by the invite requirement are email and chat because spam.

The maintainers (I know some of them from things like Occupy) are incredibly helpful and they are available 24/7 on IRC. They are very transparent about donations and government requests. They keep no logs that can be used by governments and don't provide any information anyway because while US based, they use offshore hosting. Your VPN can be setup to go through Amsterdam or US servers, whatever works for you. Consider the pros and cons yourself. Riseup is a service for activists (at least those involved in liberatory social change). The best way to find yourself an invite then is to get involved in activism. If you're in that category I won't have an issue providing a code to you via DM.

Here's a list of places you can go to which offer free services like the ones hosted at Riseup. I can't give any invite codes out because of spamming. But there are plenty options out there like Autistic/Inventati and Disroot. They cater to decentralized movements and organizations. You might have to make a case for your usage of Riseup if you go to their IRC server and ask for an invite. But it's nothing personal, it's just a risk of spamming and other "black sheep".
