Exactly. Who’s to say they will stop at just the camera roll? Why not scan the whole device at this point?

Glad I don't own any Apple products. They claim that they care about user privacy, but then they do things like this. And its always been like that with Apple. Sometimes they actually do good things, like their recent App Tracking Transparency feature that rolled out in iOS 14.5. But this latest feature is in no way good for anybody's privacy.

They do these things to tote themselves as the “Privacy Smartphone” but they are backtracking at this point.

Apple has clarified the specific measures, which rely more on hashing than checking your actual image:

"Instead of scanning images in the cloud, the system performs on-device matching using a database of known CSAM image hashes provided by NCMEC (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) and other child safety organizations. Apple further transforms this database into an unreadable set of hashes that is securely stored on users' devices."

This is likely less invasive than what Discord uses to identify NSFW images. Made a post about WhatsApp opposing the measure. Still terrible for privacy.

Regardless if they check each picture with a real human or hash cracking, I do not want my gallery to be scanned/analyzed. Whatsapp/Discord I could care less about, they are app’s and dont make up the entirety of my phone. Like you said, still absolutely terrible for privacy.

So who’s to say they actually find Child Porn. What then? What if its an underage only taking pictures of their junk, and not sending it out? I did this often as a minor. This is completely open for misuse from the wrong people in charge.
