This was a Tweet he sent out October of last year:

I did hear something about this specific tweet, but I never looked into it. But to be honest, I don't know who would have anything against McAfee that would be cause for murder.

People wanting him dead is a very real possibility. No doubt he's made questionable decisions and dealt with some bizarre types. He originally sold his shares for the anti-virus in 1994, for $100 million. At the time of his death he was only worth about $4 million. Even the most expensive cocaine habit wouldn't put a dent in that amount of money. It's also possible he said that stuff just to spite the USG, if he ever did decide to fold his cards.

Is it weird I could equally see him saying that shit while already planning to commit suicide as a final "fuck you".

Then again, I'm not sure I believe that's actually what's happened. It all seems very strange to me.
