I know people(like family or friends) who have been renting the same apartment for $800 a month for the past 15+ years. With those payments, you could easily pay off the mortgage to a house

I certainly agree, rent Is a 100% loss to the renter.

Save a deposit and get a mortgage- the house/apartment will one day be your own.

I've been telling my girlfriend that when we finally get a place, I want to put a deposit down into a house and just pay off the mortgage.
