Well what are you learning? Software development? Web development?

For software, check out C; Perl; Python and your operating system's shell. Bash on *nix and Powershell on Windows.

For web-development, check out HTML/CSS (not programming languages, but markup languages) if you haven't learnt them yet for front-end development. For more back-end work check out Perl and Python w/ Django.

Pick one and learn it.

Hey. Well, first of all, we need to determine where your interest in programming lies. Web application programming? System application programming? etc.

When you figure it out, please reply and let me know so I don't have to type out descriptions of each area.

If you're having trouble figuring out, you should state that as well along with some extra information which could help me pinpoint which area of development would be better for you to begin at.

Alright well in that case, there are a number of things that are important when it comes to Web application programming.

Many people don't consider this, but it is very helpful to become familiar with important subjects in computers as it applies to the Web. You'll want to understand the basics of how computer systems work and learning your way around a Linux system (Linux OS is very prevalent in webservers), how websites work, the DOM (Document Object Model), basic knowledge (very basic at least) of how certain network protocols work (such as HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, Telnet, SSH, SMTP, TCP/IP, UDP, etc.) and how to make use of them, how the data transfers that occur between a webserver and a client system work, blah blah blah.

Knowledge in areas such as those mentioned above will help you in your journey to developing useful Web applications as you will understand how they actually work. You will also understand what happens behind-the-scenes.

A problem with many programmers nowadays is that they don't understand what they're doing. Without this knowledge, many of these developers make grave mistakes in their code that can leave their websites vulnerable to attackers. Not only this, but they're only fooling themselves into believing that they are real programmers. Sure, by definition they are programmers, but a true programmer actually knows how his code works. Even if he/she doesn't know how it works EXACTLY down to the hardware, at least he/she has an understanding and this is extremely important, in my opinion.

I got a tad bit carried away... back to the original subject...
You'll want to start with a language such as HTML for basic WebDev. It's a very simple language, not in the least bit difficult and it should give you a pretty good picture of what you can do to manipulate your own webpages. After you understand HTML (you understand how the tags work, you can manipulate code, you know your way around, etc.), you should probably move on to another language. If you want to work with webpage designing, move on to CSS. If you want to write scripts, move on to JavaScript. If you want to get into server-side programming, move on to PHP (probably one of the most important WebDev languages, in my opinion).

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. CSS allows web developers to apply different styles to their webpages. Styles basically define how your webpage will be displayed (colors, tables, backgrounds, images, element alignments, etc. etc.)
Styles can be applied in your HTML code as well using the style attribute in your tags. However it is usually a lot neater and can be less confusing to use CSS documents to apply your styles when working on larger projects.

JavaScript is not to be confused with Java. JavaScript is a powerful, lightweight scripting language that is considered to be very easy to learn and apply. Scripts are usually used in order to manipulate webpages without having to redirect the client. For example, something like a slideshow on your webpage. However, there are many other uses for JavaScript. In my own experience, I created a little turn-based battle game in JavaScript once just for the hell of it. The HTML code on the current page could be manipulated to display new information rather than redirecting the client to a new page.

Instead of me wasting your time here by explaining everything in my own words, you should head on over to w3schools.com to take a look at the other Web languages available out there. Be sure to check out PHP. It's a very useful language.

I hope this helps!

Very nice post Aristotle, I agree with you.

You shouldn't recommend w3schools though: http://www.w3fools.com/

I wasn't aware of that. I usually recommend it to people because I use it as a syntax reference all of the time. Thanks for mentioning that and I'll refer new WebDevs to another website instead.

HTML or VB.NET is what I'd reccomend, they''re both easy to learn and adapt.
Also, Python is a good alternative ^^
