I just got word of this a few minutes ago, and thought it was a little insane. According to Trumps tweet when this was announced he stated that these tariffs will start at 5%, and could increase up to 25% in the coming months. His reasoning behind this was to get Mexico to take more initiative against their illegal immigration crisis. Trump said these wouldn't stop until that happens. In my opinion, this is a little insane. I don't think we should go to another trade war with a country that we do a lot of trading with. And if I read another article correctly, we export more to them, then they do to us. Which is obviously a bit of an issue, since they can impose their own tariffs. What do you guys think of this?

You could dig incredibly deep down, but that would take too much time, money, and resources. Or the people behind this plan could be smart and place seismic detectors all across the border. Don't know how expensive they though. I'm surprised they aren't already in place.

The irony is that Mexico has very strict laws about foreigners illegally entering Mexico. If you are caught living in Mexico illegally, you'll spend years in a Mexican prison before being deported to your country of origin.

What they don't care about is people running away from Mexico and becoming someone else's problem.

I don't know why Trump can't just wait. I like him, but he's too trigger happy. The new problem with China now is that they're even more triggered because the US is planning on selling 100+ Abrams M1 tanks to Taiwan. And I believe China could be planning an invasion of Taiwan from what I've read.

I agree, it's ironic as hell. And it's not a good look for any country. They've already got a pretty poor reputation with all of their other problems. They just let us deal with what's ultimately their problem.

As a SAR Chinese, I just find this a bit annoying, and frankly, a pain.
hong kong is currently trying to pass the 《逃犯條例》(a.k.a. Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation) which essentially is a law about Immigration, quite likely caused by the trade war.


If Chinese gets angered, simply banning exports to the US is enough.

Trump reached an agreement with Mexico last week. So these tariffs will never go into place.
