Elon Musk: maiden Falcon Heavy launch #1

It was a good day for a rocket launch.

Elon Musk has successfully sent his 27 engine Falcon Heavy rocket into space and subsequently his Tesla Roadster into orbit as as well. The car itself will be well on its way toward Mars shortly. This launch test is a huge move for Elon and SpaceX. Though the Falcon Heavy’s outer cores successfully landed after launch this afternoon, the middle core of SpaceX’s huge rocket missed the drone ship where it was supposed to land. SpaceX  confirmed this publicly earlier when it stated it "failed to provide enough propellant to slow down its descent."

The live feed of the launch was - objectively - quite fascinating; there were several times when the cameras dipped in and out but that's normal. Sometimes the rocket cameras are jostled around so much. Despite this, it is a large step from the model ship that it started as 7 years and dozens of failed tests ago. Now it sits at roughly 230 feet tall, on the famed launchpad at Kennedy Space Center where the Saturn V flew the first humans to the moon.

The flight went swimmingly. Overall, this odyssey will only fuel more inspiration for SpaceX and the achievements that will surely follow.

If you want to watch the feed, it's right here.

P.S.: Here's how not to land an orbital rocket booster.

SpaceX had learned from its past and seemingly perfected the dual-landing sequence.

Did anyone else watch this live?

There was supposed to be a 66% chance of success, and it worked out well. Their landing system is really neat.

There was a while before they confirmed it but the propellant simply ran out and it crashed into the water at 300m/h. Sorry, but that's still a huge success for space exploration and rocket tech. It's also a trend setter and world record holder, being that it landed two boosters simultaneously. It also is the heaviest payload - for now.

This was for the core module?

Yeah..

Quote:"The center core was only able to relight one of the three engines necessary to land, and so it hit the water at 300 miles per hour. Two engines on the drone ship were taken out when it crashed.."

Something along these lines happened, but there's no video of it as the explosion ripped the cameras apart.

Where'd the middle core go? Tongue

The middle Falcon 9 booster is the one landing in the bottom right of the graphic. The whole process is identical to the regular Falcon 9 procedure, just with two additional boosters.
It's often the outcasts, the iconoclasts ... those who have the least to lose because they
don't have much in the first place, who feel the new currents and ride them the farthest.

It was supposedly YouTube's second biggest livestream to date:

Apparently landed in the water.
