You and I both know that most users don't read them until they have been sufficiently told to...

Not commenting on the rest, but yeah... Maybe 1% of new signups read the rules before being told. We should at least make them wait for 1 minute on a page with the rules... (Don't let them do anything until the timer ends)

But then people will still just open a new tab, and do whatever.

I think we make too big of a deal about the rules. I mean, they're pretty self-explanatory on every forum, be respectful and post things in the corresponding sections. People that consistently break the rules just aren't meant to be.

But yet at least 50% of the new users I see disregard them entirely and their first 30 posts are 8 words, off topic/rude/complete bullshit

I like the idea about dealing with new users but unsure about this suggestion. Don't have any ideas however.

After a (long-ish) discussion with staff, it was decided that this is never happening.

no that idea is bullcrap
screw it

I do agree that a small simple multiple choice test would be great. This would prevent a lot of spam and LQ posters in my opinion. If you make it a whole test, yes then people would go away, but what is 2-3 questions, like 2 minutes? In my opinion it's certainly worth it.

This post is why I would support something similar but as part of the discipline process. After they break a posting related rule (lq posting like the quoted one), is it really such a stretch to make them prove they've read the rules, and not let them have posting privileges?

Sometimes the rules are up to interpretation, or @Oni might disagree with what we do. It's command structure. He outranks me. If I didn't trust his judgement, I wouldn't mod for him.

And vice versa. If Oni didn't trust our judgement, we wouldn't be In this position.

This suggestion may help, but It's certainly not an Instant and permanent fix. Familiarity and awareness (with the rules) Is one thing, good practice with posting habits/compliance thereafter Is another. An analogy of this, Is similar to that of a drivers license test. Once you pass the test and obtain your license, how many of you stick to the road rules and "never" speed nor break any rule whatsoever?

I'm closing this thread.

This isn't gonna happen, so there's no point in keeping it open.

@phoyt123 That LQ post with no description is what this was aiming to avoid.
