[Suggestion] Require new users to pass a test on the rules before posting. #1
There's been a bit of LQ posting lately, so a while ago I thought of this idea.

Recently, it has been mentioned again (by @phyrrus9), so I decided to make a serious thread about it.

I'm not sure how hard it would be to implement, I could try to make something (but there is better web-people out there)...

Thoughts?

This poll is hard.... there's 2 of those options that I think should happen... I think you know which one I'd rather, as improbable as it is.

The thing with invite only is we'd need something that would want users to get an invite, there's hundreds of forums out there and if we don't have much to offer over other competition there's no use doing that and we'd slowly drop activity IMO.

Making users take a test when they join is something I'd be 50/50 on. Nobody really wants to take a test just to access a site, and while anyone who pass would understand the rules of course, it could steer away users who won't be bothered. Not everyone who cannot be bothered aren't necessarily LQ, they can turn out to be smart users, but are just simply lazy. If we did do this, I'd say it needs a test run and Oni should keep an eye on stats of daily registered users to those who register and complete the test.

It's not just laziness. If you're joining a forum with no knowledge of whether it's good or bad, then taking a test would just seem like a waste of time, lazy or not. You're completely right to say it would make many people who may be smart or talented not want to join.

It's not just laziness. If you're joining a forum with no knowledge of whether it's good or bad, then taking a test would just seem like a waste of time, lazy or not. It would certainly make many people who may be smart or talented not want to join.

If you really want to join the forum and contribute, a quick test on a list of rules (that is short) isn't that bad.

I personally would not want to take a test after registration. Sad

I doubt anybody would want to. However, I'd still go through it regardless of what I want. I don't think that it would stop anybody who actually wants to join, yet it would deter spammers and shitposters.

That may sound logical, but it would certainly affect the forum's number of new good members.
Sorry if I'm making this sounds like the end of the world. It really boils down to: Is losing some good new members worth it for losing some low quality posters? (I say "some low quality posters", because there will probably be plenty even with this system).

If you really want to get rid of shitposters/low quality posters then invite-only is the best system, but that will stop just about any forum from growing at a good rate.

My view on this is that growth is bad if most of the new users are spamming/shitposting/LQ.

What's the point of a giant forum if it's filled with spam and LQ posts?

Many of the new users are lurkers too, this doesn't stop them much... My idea is to have them pass before posting, not before signing up.

The problem that I DO see with this is some lurks might want to start posting but don't want to go through the test... Still though...

I simply agree with the passing a test on the rules thing, as I dont like seeing LQ posts much. I really dont like the invite only suggestion, we wouldnt see as many members joining... I also somewhat agree with @Oni on this, it might make some people kind of upset, or mad that they need to take a test just to join a forums.

I aslo agree with the above statement.
