Darker Than Black #1
Darker Than Black is a dark, plot heavy sci-fi, supernatural, action show with great art, characters, and soundtrack. It came out a while ago, 2007, so many of you probably have seen this show making this review pointless, but that's besides the point  Confused

10 years ago a weird territory dubbed "Hell's Gate" appeared in Tokyo, which destroyed the landscape and covered the sky with fake stars. Since then people called contractors started getting various typed of abilities, sorta like X-Men except in this case having an ability meant the loss of some emotion and paying a "price". A price can be anything from constantly having to smoke or drink to rapidly aging whenever you use your power. There are also what are called dolls. They completely lack emotion and independence, but have the ability to observe things far away from them.

The show mostly follows a contractor named "Hei". Known to some as  BK201, a cold blooded assassin working for a shady organization called the Syndicate, but to most as "Li Shengshun", a rather comedic character with a huge appetite. Despite the cliche action anime description, the show really isn't and has a dark side to it which is rather enjoyable.

The story is kind of episodic. It mostly follows a 2 episode mini-arc format, with the finale being three episodes. The downside to this is that it takes a little while for characters to get developed. The first half is a bit hard to follow, since the mini-arcs don't seem to be very connected, but once you get to the second half everything comes to place. We learn about multiple organization's real motives, have a bunch of questions answered, and the mini-arcs start to work together.

Overall I'd give the show an 8.5/10. I really enjoyed it and the conclusion was great. The bad part is that despite the second half answering a bunch of questions, it still left some unanswered. This isn't the most major thing though and I certainly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet.

Btw I don't know if it's just me, but the second opening is great

RE: Darker Than Black #2
Update: I just finished the specials and second season. The second season isn't as good as the first, but I still enjoyed it.

If you plan to watch the series I would recommend:
  1. Original + special
  2. Gemini (season 2)
  3. Gaiden (4 episode special that takes place between s1 and s2)
