In order to do this, we need to change our User-Agent string to either a desktop or tablet. I'm an Android user and was annoyed that I couldn't listen to music on YouTube in the background. So I installed a Custom User-Agent String add-on from here:

This add-on is pretty handy to have. Using a desktop string may lag your Android so you're probably better off using a tablet string instead.

Here's the one I'm using:

Note: There are two spaces between Chrome/18.0.1025.166 and Safari/535.19. In case if someone gets confused and thinks there is an extra space as a mistake.

To test if it is working, play a video and open a new tab.

This is very nice to have on my (Android) phone. I always hated it that YT stopped playing music when closing Chrome or any other webbrowser. Very usefull for me, thank you, it worked perfectly.

Glad it worked for you. Another thing I forgot to add is that using an adblocker may cause the YouTube video to stop when you switch tabs, etc. It did for me with uBlock Origin.
