In my views, It's what he "did" with the Information he obtained that led to the prison sentence as described. A fraudulent offense alone, Is a serious crime, let alone everything else he did.

So judging by this:

The Romanian hacker who first revealed that Hillary Clinton used a private email address while she was secretary of state

Is that all he did, reveal her private email address without compromising her credentials? If so, that's absolutely ridiculous that It's considered an act of hacking.

He did do a lot more, i'll try pick out the key things, i might have missed a few things though:
