Sadly no.  Although per capita mortality has risen only slightly (or is the same, depending on who you ask) the way such events are presented in the media has changed greatly.  In the last few years two of my friends who happened to be in law enforcement have been murdered in such incidents.  The worst part of the experience afterwards was watching the demagogues on local and national media attempt to convert the tragedy to political currency.

Definitely. People always have a "fuck cops" mentality, when really if they were gone it'd be a lot worse than it is now.
