Don't go to Brazil though. I mean it's a nice place but there is a shit ton of crime there. If you do go to Brazil, do not go to the favelas.
There's definitely lots of crime/drug issues, but unless you go into the favelas or the wrong area you'll never have problems. I lived there a few years and never had problems. However, I knew one kid who had his backpack regularly stolen. They also shut down the school when BOPE was raiding a druglord. Depends on where you're staying/visiting, mainly.

Protip: If you bring any electronics in, make sure they look used. I've heard of their customs charging people 200% tax on certain things.
