Definitely would have to be console games. The experience is a lot different from handheld games, and I feel like handheld games are always a lot more limited than something that's developed on the console (which seems to deliver the full fledged experience).
That's not to say though, that handheld games aren't fun. I love some handheld games and I still occasionally play them when I'm on the go, but if I'm at home looking for a game to play, it's going to be one on console.

It really depends on the console/handheld as well as the games available. I'd probably go with console though, as console games usually have better controls and feel complete. Handheld games are great on the go and can be pretty fun to play (I really wanna see what's going to happen with the PSVita. I've got one and it's easily one of the best handheld systems ever).

The only handheld I've used is a PSP and it definitely doesn't compare to my 360 or PS3.

I think that the main reason that handhelds exist is to play outside your living room..
They have less power and different game styles than the consoles, I am pretty sure that most of the people would pick the console if they had to choose one of them.
