The Change, Kali Linux #1
Hey guys on HC,

I got some "simple" Questions for u. I don't know the answer, but maybe u can help me.

Im using Windows since I know PC's. After many years I bought a Mac with OSX on it.
Now that im starting to get deep with "Hacking" I searched for the "best" OS to hack.
"best" cause of I know that there is no OS better then a other one for hacking.
But Linux seems to be the OS that u can use very good to understand how programs, the OS itself and many other stuff works. (Thanks at this Points to chmod with his awesome post "Why Linux is better then Windows", if u didn't read it, just do it. Its awesome! )
Also I never worked with Linux and definitely want to try it out. Then after a few years at working with it I would choose between OSX, Windows and, ... yea, Linux Tongue

So, heres the thing:

I would try to install and run Kali (Cause of pen testing stuff - I know, I can do it with all the other Distribution's but I want to give Kali a run. I think it would help).
Is there anything to say about the installing "order" onto a VM? Cause I don't want to kill my main OS. I just want to try it out for a few years and then only program in one of the OS's.

On the Offical Download Site I can finde 2 typs of Linux Kali.
The Mini (25 MB) and the Normal (3,01GB). Whats the big difference?

Can I install the OS on a USB Drive? I read that in almost every Linux Thread so I want to know how I install it and how big my USB Drive has to be. (GB)

Thats it, hope u can help me and I hope u don't "flame" me for posting so many stupid questions. Like I said, im rly new to Linux, but I know OSX and Windows for years now.

Any other tipps that u can give me? Maybe I forget about something very special.

See ya :epic:

hi there,

well talking about kali linux, you need to be careful if you install it on your hard drive with another operating system on it lol, trust me i lost my main OS three times trying to create a dual boot.

your best chance is to create a virtual machine for kali linux so you wont get in the way of your main operating system. the installation procedures are the same as if you were installing it on a regualr pc. If you need help on the installation just look up on youtube plenty of help there.

for the USB i will put a link on here to help you create a live USB bootable device of kali linux http://docs.kali.org/installation/kali-l...sb-install

hope this helps. If you have any questions Pm me or reply here. GOODLUCK!!!!!!:Thumbs-Up::Thumbs-Up:

UPDATE

i noticed i didnt reply to the difference between the mini and the normal. My guessi s that the mini comes with specific packages and the normal comes with all the packages.

for your live usb creater use this link it will help you out more than the previous one. this application will help you create live usb from a disc. once you create the Live USB it will prompt you to eject the USB safely and connect it again to see if it works fine. if it does you should see virtual box virtualization key. i beleive it depends on the virtual machine you use. but that you get the job done heres the link

Just download "normal" Kali Linux image and install it to the well developed VM your MAC offers you. For instructions about how to install you can find them typing "Kali Linux installation tutorial" on youtube I guess, also don't bother about the version that will be installed on the tutorial you 'll watch as all versions of Kali Linux have the same installation wizard (based on DEBIAN).

Hope that helps.

Hi @Soap109 ! Well Kali linux is great os but I wouldn't recommend it as first linux os. But if you are sure about what you are doing - keep going. Quote from docs.kali.org - The Kali mini ISO is a convenient way to install a minimal Kali system and install it “from scratch”. The mini install ISO will download all required packages from our repositories, meaning you need to have a fast Internet connection to use this installation method.
Hope you understood the difference.
My first linux OS was Ubuntu. It's great to start things off with Ubuntu because it's well documented, user friendly and it has wide support. And guess what? It can run the same programs what Kali linux can.

If you have some questions you can safely PM me!

Good luck
