Hi, im xinjian.

Im wondering if there is a way to proxy everything through the terminal or config file in linux? like a system-wide proxy setting that extends the proxy connection to the whole pc (browser, apt-get, ping etc).

Hello and welcome to HC

Normally this section is reserved for introductions and your question is easily answered via google, but I'll write this up for you.


Firstly I'm assuming you're in Ubuntu(Because of the whole apt-get) with unity (Same works with Gnome <3)..

1] You want to start by opening the unity dashboard and searching for "System", click on "System Settings"


2] From the system settings page click on "Network"


3] On the network page you want to click on "Network Proxy" in the left column, then select manual from the drop down. After this input your proxy settigns and click on the "Apply System Wide" button.

Im actually on chrinchbang (debian-ish)

which packages do i install to get the same tools? do u have to install the whole gnome desktop? or is this an ubuntu only thing?

I assume you mean crunchbang? you could try something like proxydriver or proxychains which should allow you to achieve what you want, but personally I think you'd be better off with a VPN

I have never heard of chrinchbang and googling it only shows an image board thread..

But what do you use as a desktop environment(If any)?

#! (Crunchbang) is a debian derivative just like Ubuntu, Kali Linux, and more. The package manager may be the same, but what comes on the OS is not.

I would recommend you install tor and proxychains.
After you install these, edit the /etc/proxychains.conf file and add tor (and I also advise you add a public proxy at the end (find some good sock4 proxies at hidemyass)
So your setup will look something like this in proxychains.conf:

[ProxyList] socks4 127.0.0.1 9050 # This is tor, 9050 is the default port # Here we use a public proxy, because some services recognize and block tor, so we first route through tor, and then into a public proxy socks4 123.456.78.90 3128 # This would be a public socks4 proxy

To test if everything is working and routing correctly, we can try proxychains with curl

There are plenty of tutorials online that can show you how to install both tor and proxychains. If you need anymore help, feel free to reply.

lol. yeah, chrunchbang. sry brainfart. proxychains only does one program each time, if im correct... i was thinking of proxying my whole internet connection at once so to speak... i looked at /etc/local config and it didnt seem to do anything
