Internet Problem [Internet works with proxy only) 04-15-2014, 04:04 PM
#1
I have a wifi in my place given by an organization. I can connect to it giving a password but cannot use the internet without giving a particular proxy address and a port, the proxy address is the default gateway address and port is a particular number. The problem is without using that proxy my internet doesn't work. Can anyone tell me why this is happening? I have no problem in using net that way but the torrent clients dont work and i can't use my laptop as wifi hotspot.

I think it is the AP (access point) configuration, but you say that the proxy address is the default gateway address? something like 192.168.1.1? ... something is weird here (yet interesting), could you please give us more details?
- AP brand
- Country or ISP
- Can you access the AP admin page via web/telnet? If yes... what is your routing configuration
- What is the port number?
Thanks, and please if you fixed this issue already, could you provide us with details... this is a rather interesting case! (for me personally)
Thanks

You've stated that the wifi is provided by an organisation. I take this to mean a group/charity/business that is not an ISP.
If that is the case, then in all likelihood their network is firewalled/protected/segregated - and the only way to access the outside network, from the inside, is to use the proxy. Which is probably the only device that is allowed access between the internal, and external, networks.
This is the way a good wifi network is set up for a business or organisation.

I have same issue as him but mine is for the university. My issue with it though is that how do you make applications that don't support proxy settings notice and use the proxy settings in windows 7. I alread changed the lan settings proxy in control panel but some apps still don't know that there is a proxy giving access to the internet.
This is backflow of Windows, I wonder if there is a way to create a file in System32 that would enable global proxy for all apps like xubuntu and lubuntu in /etc/extenstion and /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/p5config. Surely this must be possible in Windows but via other routes.
