A simple way to answer this would be yes: Windows 8 can be infected, but so can Linux and Mac OS X, they're not completely virus proof.

However the matter is a bit complicated, as there are two main versions of Windows 8 - for PC's and for tablets, which lacks a lot of the older stuff and API's and essentially the whole desktop.

This means that none of the existing viruses will work on the tablet version, because it's a bit different system than the one they were created for, however it doesn't mean that new viruses and other malicious software can't be created to exploit the vulnerabilities. The new version could be much safer (but also more restrictive), but time will tell.

As for the desktop version, some of the existing malware can work, some might not, because they fixed/changed some of the vulnerabilities.

However your assertion that Linux can't be infected is faulty. Linux can be infected and there are some viruses for it, however it's not in the interest of the authors of the malware to target Linux, as very few people use it, at least on their desktops. If they target the Windows system, they essentially target the majority of computers, if they targeted Linux, they would have much smaller amount of potential systems to infect.

Simply put, just because there aren't many viruses for given system doesn't mean it's safe and virus-proof, the reason could be just that no-one is interested in making viruses for it.
