RE: Getting Started with Linux #11
Sorry if you answered my question in the post but I really can't read through all that to find it. So here's my question: what makes Linux better than Windows? Linux doesn't support a lot of video games so for gamers it's a poor choice and I was wondering if for me (gamer) there would be any real benefit to me switching?

You should check out SteamOS. Its Debian based.

I heard even though it is made by Steam it's still pretty crappy. Watched a review on it and he only really had negative things to say.

Tarew,

i didn't cover the "benefits" of Linux over another OS such as Microsoft Windows. That can tend to be a bit of a philosophical debate and was beyond the scope of my guide. The intention my guide is to aid the new user who has decided to learn linux for whatever reason.

Now that being said, Linux has a number of benefits over Windows for me and my usage. The main thing to keep in mind is that Linux may not be the right choice for you if gaming is something of major importance. Yes, Linux has come a long way on the gaming front, and it's gaining more and more traction every day. However, many gamers still feel that Microsoft Windows is superior for gaming, and they may well be right. I am not a gamer, so I will leave that judgement to those who do regular gaming. Some of the benefits I like of Linux over Windows include:

Little active/wild malware
Open Source
ease of installing software
wide range of filesystem support, more fault tolerance for failing hardware such as hard drives
huge support community
less need to restart over MS Windows (typically only needed for kernel update)

These are just off the top of my head, and just my own personal preference. I don't want this thread to turn into a "Linux is better than Windows! RAWR RAWR RAWR" or "Windows is better than Linux, RAWR RAWR RAWR!" debate, because in the end the OS you use, just like everything else, comes down to personal preference and personal needs.

I hope this helps answer your question, if you'd like to try playing with Linux without the need to remove you Windows OS, this guide is perfect for you since the entire intention was to make sure people could try Linux without completely upsetting their current system.

I know you said you would like to get to some other distros (red hat, ect..) but, will you ever do anything for kali linux? (*Embracing the hate incoming for this question*)

I'm a bit of a nub with most linux distros, But I like Kali and Tails. I just want to learn more about Kali and didn't know if you would wander into that distro at any time.

It's very possible I may venture into some of the tools within Kali. I'll be doing that guide with the expectation that the reader has experience with linux though, so earlier guides/how to's will be created well before getting into that series. I'd like readers to be able to take what they learn from my guides and have the skills to get a job doing linux admin work. Kali isn't used much in the Enterprise environment, so I'll be focusing on different skills first.

I've added Kali to my list of stuff to go over though, as the interest in Kali seems high. This will be a future project for sure.

Aha Awesome! I kinda figured Kali wouldn't be a main one because you did say something previously about teaching people how to sys admin and whatnot. Can't wait for more tutorials dude. Keep Rockin!

Thanks so much for the kind words, that really means a lot to me as I put a lot of work into this first guide.

Thanks to everyone who has left comments about the material, I hope to continue building upon this content in future installments. I'm also listening to the feedback very closely (as well as I can hear text lol) to make sure I'm delivering what you want.

For now most of my stuff will be published/debut to Sinisterly exclusively for the first 30 days. I may change that in the future (if I start my own site) but Sinisterly will always be the first to be alerted to new things. I like Sinisterly because it feels like a smaller community that has a lot of activity, and I like that. Compared to say hack forums, I feel like a guide like this would just be lost in the muck.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're really referring to as Linux, is in fact GNU/Linux, or as I've taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Thank you for your interjection and additional information. This information is well beyond the scope of this thread, but still good for those looking for additional info.

This thread is intended for those trying to start using what is conventionally called Linux for the first time. Perhaps in a future installment I can get far more technical, in which case perhaps I will call upon you for your expertise in the content.
