I’m not sure if they’ll be taken over solely by phones, and I would only see that as a probability if how people conceptualize what a phone is changes dramatically (and I mean that in all seriousness) in the future. Presuming phones would be considered handhelds, it’s really a question on whether or not handhelds can dominate consoles.

There are phones with OS like Android that could play Grand Theft Auto, however, I think it would be quite some time, or a long time before handhelds can handle graphics and processing powers that would rival next-gen consoles. It just seems improbable that phones are going to dominate. If you mean in terms of revenue, market share, and such, then that may be the case simply because phones would be cheaper and more sought after.

But if even with that, if you're talking about long-term sustainability in that spectrum, I highly doubt whatever statistics that would show that would have people having epiphanies, and dropping their controllers on the spot while reveling on how consoles are suddenly inferior to phones.



And if you’re talking about replacing consoles completely where production becomes useless and creates less profits for corporations, that’s a completely different matter. Handhelds like the 3DS can play what would be on the N64 and even the GameCube. PS Vita would follow that same trend of being a second-hand medium.

And let’s not forget PC where concepts, inspiration, and 3D workflows are mostly done to even script and integrate to other electronic mediums.

My sociology teacher brought this up last year. He believes it will happen, but I do not.
I hate phone gaming and consoles will remain on top.

Console gaming is going to make the necessary steps to remain the most loved gaming platform.
Virtual Reality may soon come into play, but phones may be highly integrated into the platforms.

As Link said it would be a very long time until a phone or handheld could handle the graphics that a console has. And just look at the prices for phones right now. You could get an iPhone 5S for ~$700. They cost more than next-gen consoles! If a phone is able to run console graphics it would end up costing you way more than what the price of a console is. Also handheld devices are meant to be played on the go or something similair to that, not in front of a TV.

Well actually the growth rate of technology is exponential and if you look at the Nexus 5 they are trying to make high quality phones affordable. Consoles were meant for gaming and look at where the xbox One is. Things change.

Technology is moving fast for phones but so does console technology. By the time smartphones can do what consoles are doing now, console would've advanced by leaps and bounds. Smartphones are limited by the fact that they aren't systems for gaming so the innovation for it is slow unlike consoles which are built solely for the gaming audience.

Honestly if they could find a good way to use a controller and a phone then i would play that, but the mighty PC shall prevail over all else.

Sorry but I don't really see this happening anytime soon to be honest. I know most people have mobile phones but I think it just isn't considered as an serious forming of gaming compared to console or PC.

I sure as hell hope not. I don't like playing any kind of game on my phone, and very rarely ever play handheld games either.

I do see there are less and less people play the gaming consoles and play game on their mobile devices. In fact, a few months back, I have heard a news about Nintendo is going to put gaming into the next level. Nintendo is going to support some games on the mobile devices. I don't know whether it is true or not I think it is going to happen eventually. I do see that some people tend to prefer playing games on their smartphone nowadays.
