I'll state something here that as long as I see is not known among most people. The FBI has started a major operation to catch all hackers that have carried out big operations against corporative societies and governmental websites. Along with that comes the fact that they have bought almost every publically known VPN server logs and can trace you in a matter of seconds. Pretty soon every second professional hacker that has hacked/attacked something big will be caught during this operation. However, there are always those prodigies that will never get caught, but we're just not one of them.

So VPNs are only good unless you're messing up with something governmental. The most secure way of concealing your identity is to connect throughout deep tunnelization and spoof your MAC address. Along with that, buy an antenna that catches remote (30-40km) Wi-Fi signals and allocate the traffic on the network.

VPNs change the whole IP source (mask) not only browser protocol as most software distribution do - so yes it will.
