Newspaper's SMM messes up #1
Earlier today, italian newspaper "Corriere" got in some trouble, as the Twitter account started posting hateful replies related to one of their online articles (posted shortly before).

Spoiler:
I'm sorry if some of you won't understand comments, but they're pretty much hateful/edgy ones

Every tweet was followed by the username that should have posted the reply, so many started thinking about a bot farm (or how you'd like to call it) to keep the engagement high.
What's interesting is, the accounts don't seem to be "fake", but "legit" ones.

What are your thoughts about? Do you think generating hateful comments to fuel debates, and thus generate more views, is the only way?

I was only able to loosely translate.

It looks like they were ranting about:
  • Certain radio making money during COVID
  • Gay pride / political correctness in media
  • Immigrants attending college free

Thank you for taking the time to translate and edit the links, Dismas! I wrote the post quickly before having to leave. I'll update it a bit below with further information.
I won't try to edit the post 'cause I'd have to separate the website links again, and I don't want to bother anyone.

“Corriere” released the following statement yesterday:

Quote:“For a few days now, the Corriere's Twitter account has been experiencing problems that result in the republication of tweets from some followers, outside of our control and will. We have taken steps to delete tweets that have nothing to do with our normal activity, and we are working to resolve the anomaly.”
Spoiler: The twitter link

So they're basically throwing the "anomaly" stone. I was expecting  a "we've been hacked" one, though..

Since you’re here, I wanted to ask you if you ever witnessed something similar with your country’s digital newspaper.

I can't recall it happening to any large organizations here, but it definitely happens. There's also the possibility it was a disgruntled/unstable employee.

Well yes, we both have no doubts about it... however, when things like this happen under our nose, they always lead to "moments of reflection".
Personally, I believe that it should be the writer's skill to keep the engagement high, using such "aids" to boost it is pretty sad...

Hard to say whether it was a security breach, disgruntled employee, or just an employee trying to meet metrics...

There was a similar situation when someone streamed Tifa porn to the Italian senate.

Thanks for putting a smile on my face, I remember it pretty well, along with the senator quietly asking for "help to kick out the intruder" lol

But yeah, like you said, hard to know the true story... first off, it was supposed to be a Zoombombing, then they found out the user had regular access to the zoom call, and somehow managed to stream his desktop.

At the end of the day, pretty much everyone forgot about this, and I'm sure we'll also forget what happened with "Corriere" soon...
good night
