Sinisterly Link Shortener #1
I suggest that sinister.ly get their own link shortener service that must be used when posting or creating threads.

There is no need for a secondary domain or a new server, and lots of self-hosted applications are available. I do know in this case, it won't seamlessly integrate with the site. Personally, I wouldn't mind the little bit of effort just to be able to get analytics on my link clicks.

I also know that there are other sites that can do this for me if used.
The reason I do not use them is:
  • I hate going to a site that redirects me to an ad infested page where I have to wait for a secondary link, so I will not, by choice, do this to someone else.
  • Since there are many link shorteners available, I would like a nice one, and what nicer one than a sinister one?
  • It will be beneficial for the admin if they need to remove content in a post.
  • I can re-use previously created links.
  • People that just register an account to promote some other website or service or who posts spam messages, usually won't make the effort to go and create a link specifically for the website which will also let them stand out above the ones that do, assisting admin personnel in identifying them and getting rid of them.

This is a good one, I would support and I think @mothered would see its usefulness. @Oni is this an easy one?

Generally with our forum, I figured this went without saying. However, recent discussion has led me to believe otherwise. People are encouraged to read and follow our rules, especially those regarding illegal content. You have been warned - @Oni

The fact Is you cannot force members to use the service.

Members with shorteners that direct to a number of redirections, do It for monetizing purposes and remain firm with It - they will not change to a service that does not pay for their contributions. Others that contribute direct links Is perfectly fine, hence there's no purpose using this board's link shoretener service. I like the suggestion, but I don't see how It will benefit when It's not a mandatory requirement for members to use It.

I will gladly stand corrected If members outline Its perks to the contrary of what I've stated above.

I see and I understand.

My goal was to achieve a method to know how many times a link in my post was clicked, without having to use third party sites or services.
Since I do not monetize links, and I can essentially shorten any link no matter the size by simply doing this, there is currently no way for me to know.
Nb. That link goes to llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.co.uk

I have searched the internet, and found lots of answers, but none that are viable without the use of third party apps or services.
I suppose in the end I too will have to resort to a third party.

Thank you for taking the time with my suggestion.

Got It.

As per your opening comment (below), my understanding was that your suggestion with Implementing the link shortener Is mandatory among users, namely "that must be used when posting or creating threads". That's what my previous post Is based on - members must use the service.

That is what I said, and it is how I meant it, yes.

I was hoping to get the ability to be able to see how many times other people clicked on the links I provide, purely out of curiosity.

My reason for saying it must be mandatory is purely because it will make the life of people maintaining the site easier due to the fact that people who purely create an account to post garbage nine times out of ten, won't read site rules and would break this rule, making their post stand out.

I understand that you can not force anyone using the site to obey this rule.
I also do not think that something would be implemented on the site if it is not, in some way, beneficial to the site.

A lot of what I suggested is built around this one point, and I felt that the whole suggestion is rendered null because that point is not a valid point.
I apologize if I misunderstood.

RE: Sinisterly Link Shortener #8
We used to run an imagehost + shortener before. I'd rather not detail how they were misused, but the implications for the board can be pretty bad.

I'd consider doing it again, but it would have to be done with some form of oversight as to preventing illegal images/links.

RE: Sinisterly Link Shortener #9
It all sounds glorious until a person stops and thinks of everything that is and would be required for something like that to work, and it is not something I would ask nor expect of anyone.

I do appreciate the consideration, though.

RE: Sinisterly Link Shortener #10
could be a useful way to prevent some bad links from being posted also but introducing a check before continuing.
