Should the government monitor or control the Internet? 05-14-2013, 03:48 AM

Recently there has been a huge debate over whether the government should monitor the Internet. Right now it is being pushed in Washington and could very well become a reality.
Do you think there should be any kind of monitoring of the Internet? Whether it be monitoring your download activity for illegal things to censoring and taking down websites that the government doesn't deem safe, appropriate, etc.
I personally believe that the Internet should be free of any kind of censoring. The Internet should be the place where people can go to share their opinion without having to show their face. To let their voice be heard and be able to be accessed by anyone in the world at any time. This is something the world needs especially with the growing threats in the world due to harsh and power-hungry individuals. As far as checking for illegal download activity, I don't see a problem with that as long as that's all it is (which is probably won't). Even if steps were implemented to monitor such things, I and most other technologically savvy people would easily be able to bypass these monitors in a variety of ways. So in reality, I am against any kind of monitoring because there is not effective method that exists at the moment and I pray to God there never will be.
