WWDC is always a pretty huge event, regardless of whether you like or own Apple hardware or not, because, even when I don't agree with many of the things, and some of the features have already been implemented by the competition, Apple's interoperability and cohesion between their features has gotten so good in the last 4 years that it's actually crazy, even if Android has been doing it for longer, I actually respect how polished iOS is.
I didn't find any threads about WWDC, checking if anyone wants to share their thoughts on this!
If you don't want to see the WHOLE event (particularly the updates and new stuff) here are two videos of ~15 and ~24min respectively, they are quite alright and stick to the important part (I liked the second one the most)
Spoiler: Videos
Spoiler: Links
Here are some of the stuff that's a highlight for me, and for some other people that I've seen posting online already
M2 Chip
It's bigger, better, faster and more expensive. What more is there to say? It can support 24GB of RAM, so, we might see some of the new laptops be incredibly expensive with more RAM?
iOS
- Hidden and Recently Deleted albums are now locked (biometrics + password)
- Landscape Face ID on some models
- WiFi Passwords can be viewed in Settings
- Foreground blur in portrait photos
- Quick Note and locked notes (using device passcode)
- duplicate detection in photos
- templates and rich text in reminders
- edit Safari strong password suggestions
- Haptics for the keyboard can be enabled.
- Cinematic mode updated to better support edges on glasses and hair.
- Siri can do more offline (intercom, HomeKit, voicemails). Also can now hang up calls, skip confirmation before sending a message, insert emojis, and tell you her features in each app (i.e. “what can I do here?”).
- Stream to non airplay devices without Bluetooth or local network access permission (chromecast?)
- HDR10+ Support on Apple TV app.
Also, still no news on USB-C port? USB-C port when?
macOS
- Redesigned system preferences
- Stage manager, newish kind of window manager if you want
- Use iPhone as Webcam, maybe useful for people getting into streaming and maybe an interview or so, I don't think I'd waste time connecting my iPhone as the webcam for my 15min daily meeting.
What I am not a fan of right now, is the cut-off that Apple is starting to implement since their new silicon came out. I completely understand why they are doing it in terms of chip architecture, but aren't they basically saying "hey, we're going to stop supporting that perfectly working 2015 macbook pro soon"? My understanding is that support for older laptops that would generally run A-OK with a Linux distro or (maybe sluggish) Windows based on their date of release are getting the boot out of the ecosystem. Lowkey interested in maybe getting older and cheaper second-hand Apple hardware to see I can make the run as servers, or a debian distro now.
iPadOS
- Stage manager, newish kind of window manager if you want
- External Monitor Support !
- LMAO they got the weather app now
For once they added ACTUAL external monitor support, but they did the iPad and Macbook Air dirty, with support to only one external screen. More than before, sure, but really just one?
Other Stuff
Social Media Network
Some people have started commenting on how Apple might actually end up making another social network platform, so to speak. With all of their sharing functionality, you can already share pictures, tabs and information with contacts. But if you have friends that use WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal (I need to use the three of them), or other social media apps like Instagram, you still have to re-upload stuff to another place.
Think about it, iCloud shared libraries, iMessage, FreeForm and all the sharing functions they already have in place, isn't that just, Facebook?
So, some people are already there with the conspiracy theories, and some people have been arguing Apple might make their own social network at some point. Maybe they already are. Any thoughts?
Apple Watch
I have and wear one, but I don't think the changes were too big this year, not that the wearables have been doing a lot of innovation as of late IMHO, but they killed the Series 3, that they seem to still be selling on their website.
Dropped Devices
Spoiler: If your device is in this list, or lower, you're not in for the updates
