I support the intention behind it. I also heard that he will be removing ads entirely and putting in place an optional subscription based platform, similar to discord.

If it results in less censorship and freer speech, I'd argue that's a win for everyone. Whether that's his true intention is a separate matter.

The EU has stated they want to censor speech they deem offensive:

When was Twitter ever known for its censorship?  Can't you post literal porn on Twitter with no consequence lol?  I remember Trump and a bunch of bigots felt "targeted" but that's the only example I can think of.

Edit: Did some quick googleing and found that Elon Musk says he wants free speech, but his track record suggests otherwise and that Twitter’s research shows that its algorithm favors conservative views
So who's making these claims exactly? Stressed

Twitter's always allowed (properly tagged) pornography. They have, however, made it a point to censor certain messages. This can be as mild as misgendering someone. Regardless of where you stand on American politics, eliminating censorship is the solution. Free speech involves sometimes hearing things that are hateful/incorrect. The exception would be when that speech presents an immediate threat.

I would imagine that's a rare example, I took a look at the Hateful conduct policy and overall it's pretty good. What's Elon's actual solution? Allow hate speech under the umbrella of "free speech". While Americans have different laws, in Canada, it is in fact a crime. I looked at his tweets and I can't find his actual fix, just a bunch of memes and opinions that don't spell out a replacement for the policy or anything.

He's actually been pretty blunt about his intentions (genuine or not). That is, to allow free speech within confines of what is legally acceptable. Whether offensive, misleading, or hateful content would be allowed - would be based on the law. What's legal in the USA (where Twitter is based), will definitely differ from the EU. Misinformation, misgendering, or supporting Russia isn't illegal here. I don't use Twitter personally, but I am 100% for free speech.

So what is free speech, considering it's limited by definition depending on where you are? Twitter is an international platform. There's no way to regulate it based on every country's law. "100% for free speech" means what?
It's either you allow everything or you have a policy in place like Twitter currently does. Thankfully I don't use Twitter either but I'll follow along.

I wonder how he will work within confines of law. Will he go based off US law?

Musk lives in the USA and Twitter is based in the USA. While they definitely use CDNs/servers in other countries, nobody is going to be extradited for allowing free speech that another country might not.

Much like GDPR, the EU is unable to enforce anything outside of its bubble. They can issue a fine, but what do they do when nobody is there to pay it?
