Installing Cygwin - Shell Commands On Windows! #1
I decided I wanted to install CygWin so I could get used to the commands before installing linux again, so I thought I could make it into a tutorial incase any of you were interested in doing the same.

Okay, so first we are going to download the "setup.exe" from the offcial CygWin webpage

Once you have run the installer select "Install from Internet"

Now click next and choose the installation path, I'm leaving it as default.

Now we are going to pick a folder to store the downloaded files in, we can delete this when we are done so for now just name it "Temp"

Now choose "Direct Connection"

Now choose a mirror to download.

Click next.
Here's a song while you are waiting.

Now for the Packages screen just click next, if you need anything extra you can add it later.

Select the "Select required packages" box and click next.

Now you wait for it to download.
Feel free to play a VN while you wait.

Once the install is finished click the desktop icon which will launch the prompt.

Now once you have launched it you will see the prompt.
The text inside the box will only show up the first time.

Now you have installed CygWin successfully!

Here are a few things you can do to see it working.

Spoiler:
Type "pwd" (Print working directory) to see where you are.

Quote:Trey@Gibson ~
$ pwd
/home/Trey

As you can see it prints the directory you're currently in.
The directory path is
Code:
C:/cygwin64/home/Trey
Obviously replace my name with the name of your user account.

Listing files.
Instead of using "dir" like you would in the windows command prompt we are going to use
Code:
ls
(List)

and it will display the files in your current directory.
I have made a random file for the tutorial. ($ touch sinister.ly)

So now when you do the list command you will see that file.

Quote:Trey@Gibson ~
$ ls
sinister.ly

Deleting files.
So currently we have a file called "Sinister.ly" What if we want to remove the file?

We use the remove command.
Code:
rm

So you would do the following.
Code:
rm filename.extension

And it will delete that file.

If you want to delete a folder you will need to use rm - rf (recursive force)
Code:
rm -rf foldername

If there were spaces in the folder name you would add quotes, like so.
Code:
rm -rf "folder name"

Reading files.

If you want to read a file you will use "cat"
For example we have a file called SL.txt
If we do
Code:
cat SL.txt

It will print the text inside of the file.
Quote:Trey@Gibson ~
$ cat SL.txt
Nefarious http://sinister.ly

Changing directories.

If you want to switch to another folder we will use "cd" (change directory?)

Code:
cd lol

Quote:$ cd lol

Trey@Gibson ~/lol

If you do "ls" again you will see the files in that directory.

Quote:Trey@Gibson ~/lol
$ ls
It works!.txt

To go back simply do "cd"

Last time I called them shell commands I was told I was incorrect.

What should it be called?
Sorry.

That would be perfectly fine, don't see why anyone would tell you that you were incorrect unless they were morons.

Or you could kill about 2 hours, and install this.

Two hours? LOL. It takes 20 minutes at the most to install a distro like Manjaro.

I was including download time.

Unless you're a casual pleb, and install through CD.
