What should I do with my Raspberry Pi 3 - M00N66 - 08-09-2018

I have this Raspberry Pi 3 just laying around and I wanna use it for something. Does not need to be practical, I'm in for more of a cool/neat factor. I want to use it as a personal companion for my Laptop. Ya know, like a side kick. A personal assistant for something. Maybe like a portable dedicated multiserver or something. Any ideas? I prefer Raspbian OS because of it's dedication towards the hardware. I get so bored with this thing haha. 1 week it will be a VPN, the next a Kali device.

@mothered

I was gonna make a IDS system but, mothered recommended not to. What were your original thoughts on turning it into?

It'll can still run It, but It's not the most practical device to do so. A VM on your physical machine Is the better option. Speaking of VMs, are you able to Install one on the Raspberry Pi 3 and network It to your PCs, thereby use the phone as a testing environment?

I could do so actually. That would be something to think about.
Anyway, any suggestions for the OP besides of turning it into a retro game device?

Put kodi on it and use another machine as a plex server. To think of it, I should do that with mine!

Thats actually a really cool idea. I personally thought about making a portable Minecraft server for the fun of it. But I don't know how I would go about it hahaha.

You could use Pi-Hole (https://pi-hole.net/) to run a network-wide DNS based ad-blocker. Works like a charm if fed with good lists

I think only a virtual machine, or you can sell it

  • Kodi/media player
  • Emulator box for games with RetroPie or whatever else you like
  • Camera controller for a 3d scanner, stop-motion, etc.
  • FM transmitter
  • Web server

That's what I've used my 3Bs for apart from going in the Pi-Top enclosure - they do a pretty good job anyways as long as it isn't too high demand of a task. Some of them like say RetroPie and Kodi can go together as they're both on a Debian (or Raspbian) base which makes it nice and easy, just depends on the size of your SD cards.

Many selective options but, can only work via 1 choice.
