Greetings everyone,
A hacker who was hired to compromise Yahoo, namely accounts, has been sentenced to 5 years In prison. This clearly demonstrates the seriousness of unauthorized access to critical data/credentials.
Quote:The Canadian man who pled guilty last year to a massive spear-phishing operation of Yahoo employees—which ultimately resulted in 500 million accounts being compromised—has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Karim Baratov, 23, was also ordered on Tuesday by a federal judge in San Francisco to pay a $250,000 fine.
Hackers such as Baratov ply their trade without regard for the criminal objectives of the people who hire and pay them. These hackers are not minor players; they are a critical tool used by criminals to obtain and exploit personal information illegally.
In sentencing Baratov to five years in prison, the Court sent a clear message to hackers that participating in cyber attacks sponsored by nation states will result in significant consequences.

Agree.
Financial loss due to downtime (DDoS) and subsequent losses as a result of compromising so many accounts (as per the hacker), should be treated equally. Each have a significant negative Impact on the entities they've affected.

It`s weird. The guy received an amazing deal in comparison with his colleagues - 5 years is a minimum. I bet he will either cooperate with the law enforcement or will be hired by any cyber security companies after his imprisonment.

5 years is a good deal, I have a feeling that he gave out the names of other hackers so that he could serve less time

I certainly agree.
To benefit the police In the Identification and apprehension of all Involved, they (police) tend to cut a deal with the accused. Speak out now, serve less time later.

There's a lot that's taken Into account when sentences are served.
The nature of data compromised, distribution, subsequent losses and so forth. That said, I do agree with your above comment- at times the judicial system Is not well balanced between crimes and sentences of similar types.
