LG settles bootloop lawsuit - sigma - 02-01-2018

"Last summer, LG faced a class-action lawsuitover bootloop issues with its G4, V10, V20, Nexus 5X, and G5 smartphones. The lawsuit reached a settlement today, with LG offering afflicted device owners in the suit either $425 in cash or a $700 rebate toward a future LG device, according to Android Police. The issue, related to manufacturing defects on LG’s end, meant some owners of those devices were left with inoperable phones or phones that were stuck in a never-ending reboot cycle, hence the bootloop name.

If you’re a class member, you’ve either been contacted by the firm representing the class action suit or will be in the next couple of days to file a claim before February 12th. If you didn’t join the class already, unfortunately you’re out of luck and won’t be able to receive the settlement.

Still, it’s one of the larger settlements we’ve seen for a suit like this against a phone company, and it’s nice to see that LG is making some (legally enforced) amends to customers."

My thoughts on this are as follows:
1. It took far too long to address this issue. My phone, the then-flagship device, the G4 - suffered a bootloop inside its manufacturer warranty limit of 2 years. Despite of this, they denied the fault was their own and even after countless calls and visits to the shop, they refused to replace it.
2. I replaced my phone twice. The first time, I took it in, they let me trade it for the same device. I explained I'd probably return in a month tops, and they insisted it would be okay because the issue wasn't hardware related. They were wrong and I had to replace again in 2 weeks.
3. During this lawsuit, I contacted my own lawyer and stated that all of this had happened and he told me he would contact LG about my case. We filed the necessary paperwork and I filed my claim to LG which was *never* answered.
4. I am now out of warranty, have a new device (the V20), and this lawsuit falls beyond my ability to replace it. LG refused to comment when I called and spoke to the higher-ups.

So, as it turns out, I spent $400 on a device, $30 to replace it (shipping is balls) and another hundred to file my claim through my lawyer. That's about the price of a retail V20 so I wasn't in a world-ending mood while reading about this, but I'm still very livid that it took them so long and they didn't even acknowledge their fault in their devices, let alone compensate me properly.

Given this has made global headlines In the technological sector, I've moved It to this forum.

I've had a few bad experiences with LG products (TV, fridge, phone), and haven't touched any since. In my views, they're complete trash and their customer support Is appalling.

This particular problem affected users globally, apparently. I don't see issues in every LG device, just their phones. And, to make matters worse, their root support had gotten bad due to their crackdown on users' devices with root applications. My G2 from 2013 was unable to have a screen replacement because I had Superuser on it. Yet, other phones are fully supported? LG is off its tits.

Agree. The equation Is pretty simple- they either support It or they don't.

In all honestly, If LG gifted me a phone, I'd tell them to take It back. I refuse to have anything to do with their products.
