Attacks & Protection - Dismas - 06-13-2013
It's rare that we get downtime for very long, but lately we've been getting a large amount of distributed denial of service attacks. Downtime is a big concern and I apologize to all of you. Unfortunately, I've been ridiculously busy with my personal life lately and it took me a bit longer to deal with the attacks than it normally would. The attacks are some of the largest we've received in a while and there are multiple people responsible for them.
As a response, I have set up protection in order to weaken and hopefully completely prevent further attacks. Few sites have to deal with attacks as large as the ones we have, so it is going to cost me a bit more to protect against them. I do not foresee any future downtime and I hope everyone managed to take advantage of their time away from SL. This isn't an everyday issue for us and I will make sure it isn't an issue again.
Drop your questions and concerns below and I'll surely address them.

Make sure you're using SMTP mailing instead of PHP.

I'm aware members spamming on other sites had caused some of the attacks. However, it's not really reasonable to ask for me to punish them, since it isn't against our rules.

Why not 'hire' some so to say security officers who's main deal would be protecting the site.
The AF community has loads of capable and trustworthy people for that.

IPs can be taken from STMP too.
