Chinese Man Gets 5-Year Prison for Running 'Unauthorized' VPN Service - Torwaldson - 12-22-2017

While continuing its crackdown on services that help Chinese citizens to bypass Great Firewall, Chinese authorities have sentenced a man to five-and-a-half years in prison for selling a VPN service without obtaining a proper license from the government.

Earlier this year, the Chinese government announced a ban on "unauthorized" VPN services, making it mandatory for companies to obtain an appropriate license from the government in order to operate in the country.

Citizens in China usually make use of VPN and Proxy services to bypass the country's Great Firewall, also known as the Golden Shield project, which employs a variety of tricks to censor the Internet in the country.

The Great Firewall project already blocked access to more than 150 out of the world's 1,000 top websites, which includes Google, Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, Tumblr, and The Pirate Bay in the country:

China Is slowly (but surely) killing the end user's "rights" to Internet freedom.

5+ years of jail time for VPN distribution without a license? I've seen murder charges serve less.

I think that this is bullshit on China's part, this guy didn't do anything wrong in my eyes but we live in a country renowned for it's freedoms.

My thoughts are with this man as he spends the next 5 years in a living hell for basically nothing.

Very well said.

If China wanted to Impose a penalty (which evidently they did), must It be a 5+ year prison sentence? My goodness, In all seriousness, I've read so many reports over the years that those charged and convicted of "manslaughter" have served lesser sentences and a handful got off scot-free. This Is a disgrace to say the least.

That first link is both amazing but also very scary imo, being judged and watched almost 24/7 to determine whether your a good citizen and if so much as imply anything such as sexism your credit rating/trustworthiness is knocked down.

In a way it could work but the fact that you could be nationally shamed (sort of) just for any mistake//insult/profanity you use is shocking to say the least.

Orwell was right ... no privacy for any private citizen, what a world we are about to step into.
