I would like to point out that most of the time free online numbers are accessible to anyone so if you do use it as a phone for your accounts, it won't be hard for someone to get into your accounts

Some people don't like distributing their number with an unknown entity.
I have a secondary prepaid SIM card for purpose of phone verification. I haven't spent any money on credit, but can still receive messages (but cannot generate any).

Just as a matter of Interest, have you tried It with Gmail's phone verification that's required during the creation of the account?

I did not try it during the creation of the account but I did try it when signing up for google voice number and it did not work.
