Exactly what it says on the tin. Some Cisco devices, like my 2911 ISR, have a usb port for their console. Grab yourself an OTG cable for your phone, and Slick USB 2 Serial Terminal, and you have yourself a portable terminal. While not exactly a joy to use, it can get you by in a pinch, or if you are of the more nefarious persuasion, it can help you with your on site "security audits."

I do a similar thing with some of my equipment. I love it when manufacturers leave UART and JTAG headers on the devices. All you need are some serial driver ICs, an old USB cable, and some jumper wires

That one actually stemmed from when I built the firmware for it, I specified the wrong CPU, so I bricked it. With all my side projects I'm always broke so I had to fix it, then I realized I could configure so much more from the serial interface so I left it connected. This thing even has L3 features I can use. Pretty impressive for a K26

Pretty neat, I usually just use my laptop for everything, as I always have it with me.
I like that the app doesn't need root, even though I expected it to require it.

The 232 app? I don't know why it would need it, libusb runs in userland

A lot of programmers are very bad at their jobs. You don't NEED root access to do it, so a sufficiently intelligent programmer will make an app that is as least permissive as possible
