HP Compaq Presario CQ50 Overheating fast? - Synthx - 11-02-2017

Before I start, I would like to say, I know the very basics about computers. Mainly names of things. Not so much of what they do. I plan to learn more when I get in college next year.

So, I recently found a HP Compaq Presario CQ50 series laptop in my living room, and I booted it up, and oh fuck me, it had Vista on it Sad I went to look at what programs it had installed, and the lowest date for a program installation was 2008. I do not know the history of the laptop other than it is old. It does not look like it has ever been dropped. For some reason about 6-7 minutes of it being on, it just shuts down, I don't mean "Windows is shutting down" I mean, halts just a black screen. I then have to press the power button for it to boot back up. When it does shut off like that, underneath the laptop where the fan is, its VERY hot. When I boot the laptop I can hear the fan come on, its not loud at all though. I do not know if it is supposed to be or not though. I even booted it into OPHCrack which is the only live disc I had at the time and it still would overheat and turn off after about 5-6'ish minutes. I think that it could either be the fan just being clogged up with too much dust, and not being able to blow fast enough, or it is something to do with the motherboard.

I was able to find my laptop which is the same one. I tried booting it up, but the bios is "screwed" on it, something about the "CMOS Checksum bad" I could be a tad bit wrong about what it is says. It shows that screen, and tells me to hit F1 to continue, and everything was fine after that. What does that mean I'm gonna google it after I post this thread, but your advice would be appreciated.? I just know it has something to do with some kind of "checksum" being bad. Also, before it shows text and gives that "checksum" error, it does 2 beeps if that helps.
After I pressed F1, it tried booting into Windows, but Windows was corrupted:

I just know it was something similar to that picture above. I didn't have much time to look into detail. I was able to boot into OPHCrack just fine though. I also didn't have time to test if it was going to overheat like the other one. I am going to have time this afternoon to see if it does the same overheating problem.
I hope I was able to provide enough info for you guys!

Edit:
So, I booted it up, and this is what I got:

I booted into OPHCrack, and the laptop just shutoff like I said it was above, but I felt the bottom, and if I had to compare my dads to mine on a scale of 1-10 of heat it would be this:
Dads: 8
Mine: 3
It was NOWHERE near as hot as my dads. I don't have a damn clue why it shutoff, and I tried turning it back on, it got about halfway through the boot process after I rebooted it, and it shutoff..... I am really clueless to why this happens. I hope some of you can help me out.

Unfortunately I don't have time to get to you at the moment but I assure you I'll be able to in a few hours or so.

Thanks for the heads up man!

UPDATE: I have edited the thread with more info on the laptop.

The overheating can be from a bad or dead fan and dried thermal paste, make sure to check them (and clean as needed). As for the bad checksum I have never had that issue but something similar when a hardrive fails.

Okay, I didn't think about anything being wrong with the thermal paste. The checksum thing, I believe is the battery for the BIOS is just dead. As it says
Quote:ERROR
0271: Check date and time settings.
WARNING
0251: System CMOS checksum bad

Just googled it, and found this:
Quote:0251: System CMOS checksum bad. Always power-cycle your system when you receive this message. If the system repeats the error message, follow the corrective action for the error message. CMOS checksum is bad, possibly because the system was reset during BIOS boot or because of a dead RTC battery.

Have you read this page on the HP website? It may be of use but companies never really give a solid answer to anything.

Never saw that page, but I already pretty much know the problem. As stated below, it could be the battery. I really do believe it is the battery being dead because the laptop has been sitting around for almost 10 years now.
