CCleaner infected with malware - Bish0pQ - 09-19-2017

Hello everyone,

I've been using CCleaner for quite a while, though I don't like everything new they implement it has always worked pretty good for me.
It seems that between august 15th and september the 12th around 2 million users have been infected with malware that got downloaded when downloading the new CCleaner update.

If you have an outdated version you'll probably be fine but if your version is older than v5.33.6162 I highly recommend scanning your PC with Malware.
Any opinions?

Those registry cleaners are snake oil, and they can damage your system. Don't use them.

True, I'm happy I just cleanup manually since last time. Though CCleaner does not touch the registry by default. Most it does is cleaning up cache files from the browsers etc...

I don't trust or believe any of those cleaners, but I believe that my dad used/uses CCleaner.

My grandfather used CCcleaner. He actually gave me this computer and it had CCcleaner, to which I wiped everything he had (Norton, CCcleaner, a bunch of other registry crap and replaced it with good ole Avast)

Never been one to use CCleaner (or to recommend it) but I know plenty of people who do (even my old school had them pre-installed on every desktop.)

uh...sure.

Also I just found out that Piriform got bought by Avast. So did AVG. Hell, the last time I used Avast their company name was still ALWIL. Might consider them in the future when my ESET subscription runs out.

Hooray for running outdated versions. It's a shame, because this likely affected their paying users the most.

was reading about that yesterday morning when i logged on at: http://blog.talosintelligence.com/2017/09/avast-distributes-malware.html
someone apparently got in their development or build servers to plant the malware.

was siphoning data from computers, what that is, only the attackers know.

Not related with topic but go with Bitdefender or Emsisoft instead of Avast

I couldn't agree more.

I remember quite a while back (around 12 years ago) applying the registry cleaner via System Mechanic (optimizing tool), and It corrupted It to the point of where I had to perform a clean Installation of Windows. A System Restore did nothing. A few other tools also corrupted It. Since then, I don't touch the registry with any tool.

@Bish0pQ, thanks for the heads up.
