Kiznaiver review - Shinoa - 08-04-2017

Kiznaiver is a super character-driven show that tackles many philosophical questions such as what defines a friend, what does it mean to "connect", what does it mean to "love", and what does it mean to be "hurting", and it does a magnificent job at it.

The story revolves around seven highly unique characters, with the most prominent being Katsuhira. He lacks many emotions and is unable to feel any physical pain. In the first episode six out of seven characters are in a lab and are told they are part of the Kiznaivers experiment, and are "connected by their wounds". To simplify, if one of these six characters feels any pain it gets distributed between all the others. The seventh character gets introduced at a later episode.

Each of the seven characters have their own flaws and can be associated with a new, updated version of " the seven deadly sins". We watch as these seven unique and flawed characters overcome their hardships together, feel each others pain, and become friends. It shows how even the most strange and exquisite people can create a connection if they open up to each other.

Sadly this show had to end at some point, and being the highly character-driven show it was, the plot was slightly lagged and having a good ending would be very difficult to achieve. Despite this I highly enjoyed the show and think that the character development was done so well that it makes up for the mentioned issues. Personally I would give it a 9/10, but by any standard rating it deserves a 7.5/10 due to the lagged plot and not the greatest ending.
If you're looking for something new I certainly recommend Kiznaiver, although it's certainly not for everyone.

Btw: the art may seem weird at first, but you get used to it quickly. Personally I didn't mind it at all, and kinda liked it.

I liked the concept but there further I went on the more "forced" the drama felt. Anyhow, I also liked the art style and I would recommend this anime to any new anime watchers as I believe they would enjoy it. Thank you for making this review and I hope others enjoy it as much as you do. Smile

Not really sure how to do this without spoiling so I guess all I can say is that later on the drama between characters don't seem real and only for effect? Not really sure how to word it but when the drama (which the story later happens to revolve around) is "forced" doesn't leave me with anything gained from this anime as nothing felt real.

Note: Now that I'm thinking about it, when I say drama I also mean characterization and character interaction. Although while I might see this anime as mediocre, I hope everyone gives it a shot as my opinion isn't the law (and should never be lmao) and this might become your favorite anime. Also @Oni I'd like to know your opinion on it if you do end up watching it.

Oni has a pretty sound taste in anime (in my opinion). I hope I can watch it with him.

I'd love to hear your opinion on it as well. I don't know many people who have watched this show and am kinda wondering if it's just me who really likes it

It happens. No one can watch every new anime out there, especially when there are still so many good older ones to watch.

Actually, now I think about it, sometimes MAL and other sources may share synopsis etc that don't really give you an idea of what the experience of watching the show will be like. I guess that's why reviews are so useful. I've watched a lot of shows, from SL member recommendations, that I never normally would have watched as they didn't seem appealing on MAL etc. I've got some new favourites thanks to that.
