CNN Warns It May Expose An Anonymous Critic If He Ever Again Publishes Bad Content - Ecks - 07-05-2017

CNN appears to be giving veiled threats at a Reddit user who posted critical comments about the media giant. After an apology was given by the Reddit user (possibly under fear upon discovering CNN had his identity), CNN stated: "CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change."
The story stems around Trump's July 2nd tweet, which includes a video showing him wrestle and takedown someone with a photoshopped CNN logo on their head. The video was accompanied by the hashtags #FraudNewsCNN and #FNN. CNN reportedly tracked down the Reddit user who claimed credit for the tweet and announced they would not publicize the user's identity since they issued a lengthy public apology, promised not to repeat the behavior, and claimed status as a private citizen. However, as The Intercept reports, "the network explicitly threatened that it could change its mind about withholding the user's real name if this behavior changes in the future: 'CNN is not publishing HanA**holeSolo's name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same. CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.'"

The whole thing is stupid tbh. A shitposter made a harmless gif like many others on the internet. If you go anywhere like Reddit or iFunny there are those types of memes all over the place, directed at a multitude of different people/organizations.

Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the message of this gif, I hope we can all agree that this was a terrible move by CNN
(especially considering the fact that they practically blackmailed the guy for an apology)

I was talking about this at work, funny enough. Apparently 4Chan has gotten involved and they've brought to light that CNN broke a handful of federal laws in essentially threatening to dox this guy.

Knowing how much 4Chan hates Reddit, it's amazing to see how freedom of speech brings the internet together.

I was about to say something similar. Pretty sure there's amendments that would protect the individual. If not, that's a serious mistake from CNN regardless. Sometimes the media utterly disgusts me.

CNN is trying to cover themselves, and so far they are doing a mediocre job. Although I don't think it will be long before they come into some massive problems if/when the user presses charges (I would. Hell, who wouldn't.)

Bullshit, CNN is overreacting.

Also, thousands of people are complaining about CNN, not just one guy.

Just by this (quoted) statement, CNN have made a complete mockery of themselves.

So they're basically Indirectly threatening to dox the guy at any given moment. Unless I've missed It completely, I don't see anywhere In CNN's TOS that they can disclose user Information (namely "Identities") by making It community property on the net, or any other means of public disclosure.

I've never been a fan of CNN so I'm trying to say this without bias: they deserve the backlash. They shouldn't be doxing kids for creating/posting innocent memes.

Also, people mentioning that like "#chan is doxing cnn employees": they've all been doxed for almost a year now and there is a pastebin with their information.
