California bans travel to four states - Shinoa - 06-23-2017 California has recently banned state funded travel to four states. As California Attorney Xavier Becerra put it, this because “We will not spend taxpayer dollars in states that discriminate". A total of 8 states have been added to this ban list: Texas, Alabama, Kentucky, South Dakota, Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Tennessee. All of these states passed some law that one can argue infringes upon LGBT rights. Whether it be not allowing people to choose which restroom they use, or allow people to deny services to gay people. This, obviously, sparked up some controversy. Can a state really ban travel because of differences in ideology? The key here is this "A California statute that went into effect in January prohibits state-funded and state-sponsored travel to states with laws that authorize or require discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression or against same-sex couples or their families. Those travel restrictions apply to state agencies, departments, boards, authorities, and commissions, including an agency, department, board, authority, or commission of the University of California and California State University". They are not stopping anyone from going to these places, they are merely denying these states funds that they can otherwise spend elsewhere, while it means very little in actuality, it is a very big gesture showing the displeasure in these other states backwards thinking. Well they certainly can do it, I guess the question I should of asked it should they? I think they should, while it has yet to be an effective way of producing change, in any form, it still demonstrates that just because we have to deal with backwards thinkers does not mean we have to bow to them. Even on this forum you can find "debates" that show that backwards thinking is still prevalent and growing, despite or more likely to spite modern society. Well I wouldn't really call it bowing to them, more like living side by side with them without doing anything; however, I do get your point and certainly agree something should be done. I'm not entirely sure this is the greatest way to do it though

IMO, I think that it's fine as long as the majority of people in California are okay with it. That's what Democracy is and there's a reason we have federal and state government and it's worked out just fine as "we're" all still here and have been since fucking 1775.
