Kevin Mitnick - d0ntjump - 06-16-2017 I'm just curious on what people (hackers) think about Kevin Mitnick. Do people still see him as an idol? I personally enjoy reading his books, etc. I find myself relating to his same mindset/demeanor, why he did what he did/does. I myself only hack for the trill and have never had any interest in financial gain. I also consider myself a hacktivist, the world needs to stand up and take back control over our governments/corporations. RE: Kevin Mitnick - Ecks - 06-16-2017 Never knew he wrote a book, let alone the eight I have found, so thanks for that, will be adding them to my library. RE: Kevin Mitnick - Bloody Eye - 06-17-2017 He's oldschool. Mostly known for what he did early 90s to 2000s. You're welcome. "Ghost in the Wires" is a great one to start off with. The rest of his books talk about other hackers and their experiences. He is still one of the reasons I started hacking. His stories/life changed the way I perceive the world and people in general. I still think he has much to offer to the newly found hackers. The world needs more than ever this type/breed of hackers. Just saying... RE: Kevin Mitnick - mothered - 06-17-2017 The moment I read the thread's title, I couldn't wait to enter. I've read (and still do), a lot about Kevin Mitnick. He was an elite SE'er who compromised top government agencies and Fortune 500 companies. What started as phone phreaking, turned Mitnick Into the worlds most wanted computer hacker. His security firm maintains a "100%" success rate In compromising any system they're paid to hack. Here's his site: https://mitnicksecurity.com/ RE: Kevin Mitnick - d0ntjump - 06-17-2017 (06-17-2017, 04:01 PM)mothered Wrote: The moment I read the thread's title, I couldn't wait to enter. Yes, Mitnick was one of the greats and I stress to newly found hackers to read his books. His methods of hacking has somewhat depleted in the community. Most hackers want some sort of financial gain and that to me is pointless. I believe one should work hard for their assets and not steal them. Hacking is about the trill and to make security better. A good hacker should strive to make things better and not worse. Those types of hackers give the rest of us a bad image. I visit his site often. Just saying... Thanks for your post. I deeply respect all your thoughts and opinions, more than any other member on this forum. Mitnick was never In It for financial gain, more so the curiosity of circumventing security systems and exploiting vulnerabilities without malicious Intent. You're correct about "good hackers", or In hacker parlance, "ethical hackers". Without such hackers, the security of a lot of systems (example, Implementation of WAFs, IPS, prepared statements to help prevent SQLi, the use of correct back-end privileges, Input data sanitization etc) wouldn't be where they stand today. Checkout this video of Kevin Mitnick who physically (In person) SE'd a Telco company. It's only a few minutes long. It's basically Mitnick's life story and how he infiltrated a lot of companies during his glory days. Extremely motivating/impressive at the least. Please do (watch the video), I'm certain you'll like It. I've read The Art of Deception and that was awesome. I've been wanting to read Ghost In the Wires for a while now, but my computing tasks have decided otherwise. If have It In PDF format on my cell phone, so I shall read It periodically during my breaks at work. |
