Getting pulled over because running? - Bish0pQ - 05-16-2017

Hello everyone,

So basically I have a question what you think about this. (I know in each country the laws are different, just asking for thoughts).

A few weeks back, I was running to the bus stop, because I had only 5 minutes untill my bus would be there. Now my brother was cycling behind me (also pretty fast), when we were at the bus stop he said to me "blue" (cops). So I looked back and yes indeed there were cops driving behind me & my brother all the time. Luckily I didn't have any weed on me, neither did my brother.

We looked them straight in the eyes, but they moved on. Or so we thought. They turned pretty quickly, stopped and stepped towards us. Than out of nowhere, without asking any other questions like "why were you running" or anything like that, they just asked "ID's please". The bus was already there ATM.

So we gave the ID's, they wrote it down. When suddenly the cops says I need to give my wallet. He says: "Do you have anything illegal on you, like cannabis or something?". I replied: "No, of course not. Sir can you please hurry, we really need to get on this bus. My brother has to work and I have to go too." Than the cop replied: "Yeah sure, 1 minute". So the other cop was writing us down, and the other one was searching me (not my brother, just me). After that we stepped on the bus and they left.

I think they didn't handle it right, it was also very emberassing because my work is litterally next to the bus stop.

TL;DR; Do you think cops can ask someone's ID and search them because they are running? Maybe I was just jogging, or maybe I was just trying to catch my bus. In my opinion they did not have such right.

I agree with you. They should of asked why you were running. They also didnt have any right to search you for running. Police these days take things WAY too far. All I really ever hear in the U.S. is how cops are killing people, mainly blacks no offense, just stating, but they kill people when they dont have a solid reason to. I remember watching a video of how they shot a special person, I think he had down syndrome or something, and he was playing with a little plastic toy crane or something in the middle of the street, and his care taker was screaming and yelling at the cops to stop what they were doing. The cops were yelling for the person to put the toy down, and lay on the ground, and since the person didnt know what was going on, he wasnt doing what they were telling him, so they shot him. This was off of memory, so I might have accidentally got some of the details wrong, so forgive me on that.

They sound soooooo stooopid.

This is totally different from something the New Zealand Police would do.
In New Zealand, they can't search us, pull us over or arrest us without a proper reason. We have rights.

I am totally unaware of the laws over there so yeah.

From a law enforcement perspective (and not In defense of their actions In this case), the police monitor anything consistent with what may appear as suspicious behavior.

For example, those who steal, assault and perform any given crime, will run (If on foot) away from their target as quick as possible. Although the police have a right to simply ask, In my views, they had no right to take anything further than that.

As @mothered said, from their perspective they monitor anything that appears suspicious.

The cops should be able to pull you over and ask why you were running.
Unless you continue to run, ID is the most they should do.

Maybe there was recent crime or something?

@Synthx I know right. There are many videos like that on the internet. We still need them, but a lot of the cops are corrupt and don't care anymore about "to serve and protect". There are good cops too though. Justice will never be fully served.

@mothered Yes you are right about that. I also think they wrote our names down because if afterwards a crime was commited in my town, we would be the first suspects. I just think they had no right to search us, because they didn't actually SEE us commit a crime.

@"Ender" Yeah there have been quite a lot of crimes here. Not much though, most drug related things.

Some places allow "stop and frisk" as far as I'm aware. It helps if they have reason to search you. For example, if you acted nervous, suspicious, or smelled like drugs I could see why they stopped you.

I know this might be pretty weird, but are you African American because if so that was probably the reason why.

@"SuperNinja" Nope. White as a snowflake, that's not the issue.

I mean no offence, but I feel like that is something I've only ever heard American's ask.

Anyway, I suspect there might have been other motives for them to stop you (perhaps you happen to match a description of a current suspect or something else was going on). However, the fact that there was NO explanation is pretty stupid, especially with the extent of their search.

I've had few experiences with cops in the US thus far (uber driver got pulled over for not stopping at STOP signs type things). Those experiences seemed perfectly in order and the cops even took the time to apologise to me for the disruption. Cops in the UK near my old Uni would do rounds to check on the new students moving in and gave reminders about noise levels etc, but were generally very pleasant and always explained when they asked for ID or anything else. I feel like some cops could use better training though.
