Building a better network - Skullmeat - 04-29-2017

So along with studying for my CCNA, I'm currently upgrading my network hardware. I have tons of devices, and I've discovered I really like the flexibility of Cisco hardware.

My Cisco 2960 24- port managed switch arrived in the mail today:

I'm also on the lookout for a Cisco 2911 Integrated Services Router to spearhead the new setup, but even used those are fairly pricey.

Spec Sheets for you nerds out there:

How much did that cost? Aren't switches expensive?

New they are, but you can find them on ebay from e-waste recyclers for cheap. Mine was only $30.

I SE'd a switch once that MSRP was 18k but I couldn't even sell it for 1k, fucking sucked.

My setup is still a steaming pile of shit Tongue

I mentioned this in the first podcast, but that blue one is a ~30 m cat7 I stole from my school that goes from my room, through a corner of the kitchen, into the living room, over a fireplace and a door, and then into a router.

How close to the fire is the cable? And you better hope its shielded.

it goes over a fairly large mantle, it's not an issue

No no. RF shielded. Running a cable that long is gonna pick up RF interference.

I know the two black ones are shielded, but I don't have a spec sheet for the blue one. I haven't had any problems, but is there a way to check?

The cable will say STP.
